UAE payment-route risk after CBUAE action on Bank Melli

On 23 September, the CBUAE announced sanctions against the UAE branches of Bank Melli Iran. Reuters reported the action was over regulatory breaches; The National reported that the branches were barred from transactions with Iran. The scope matters. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable.

For UAE-connected businesses, the practical question is whether a key counterparty, payment route or settlement obligation depends on the affected institution. That is a specific exposure to map, not a reason to assume every banking relationship is at risk.

Groups with Iran-linked counterparties should identify who owns the contingency plan and whether alternative settlement arrangements have been tested and documented. A regulatory action affecting one institution does not, by itself, establish that other banks or accounts are affected.

Have your payment routes been reviewed for dependence on a single institution?
