FinCEN Proposes Revoking Banque Misr UAE's US Correspondent Access over USD 1.8 Billion

A proposed US measure against Banque Misr UAE has triggered a special examination by the Central Bank of the UAE.

On 28 August, FinCEN proposed revoking Banque Misr UAE’s correspondent banking access to US financial institutions. The US Treasury said the UAE branches processed approximately USD 1.8 billion for 103 companies between January 2024 and June 2026.

The CBUAE responded by ordering a forensic lookback focused on the transactions identified by US authorities. The CBUAE and Central Bank of Egypt later said the branches would continue conducting business as usual.

The measure is not yet final. That distinction matters.

For companies and families operating across jurisdictions, banking resilience cannot be assessed only by whether a local account is open today. The relevant questions include correspondent-bank exposure, transaction counterparties, sanctions screening, and access to alternative payment routes.

A banking relationship may appear stable until an external regulator changes the conditions around it.
